Construction Management

The key to running a successful business is making a profit and in the construction industry there are two basic components to increase your margins.

The first, projects must be kept on-time. To achieve this, the project manager needs to build a realistic schedule fully describing the contracted scope of work. Each stage of a project has beginning and ending dates with a list of tasks for completion. Effective scheduling requires adding extra time throughout the job to take into consideration inevitable delays. Staying on schedule, requires careful daily and weekly management of time to see that tasks are accomplished as planned.

Second, a working budget must be established from the estimate used to prepare the contract proposal. All material and labor costs plus time schedules must be confirmed with vendors, the job foreman and sub-contactors before the job begins. Any differences must be solved before the job begins to insure successful completion. When a project is managed and supervised efficiently on location, the rhythm and pulse of the schedule is monitored closely, where adjustments can be made in a timely fashion. "Minimizing impact to the schedule also minimizes impact to the overall cost". In the area of field production we will review the workflow by comparing two (2) different styles of management: linear versus central.
